When to Use a Face Mist: Before or After Moisturiser?

The MUNO journal · Everyday skincare

Use a face mist before moisturiser when it is part of your skincare routine. A mist specifically intended for use over makeup can also be an optional finishing or refreshing step. The right place depends on the product's directions, rather than the spray bottle alone.

A simple starting point: cleanse, apply your chosen mist as directed, then continue with the rest of your routine. You do not need to spray between every layer or buy both a toner and a mist.

Before or after moisturiser?

For a straightforward routine, give a skincare mist one clear job. If you want to use it as your toner or light hydrating step, apply it after cleansing and before moisturiser. If you already have a toner you enjoy, decide whether the mist would replace that step or add something you actually want.

There is no reason to build a ten-step routine around a spray. Start with a place you can remember, then judge whether the texture and finish work with your existing products. Our toner and essence guide explains how those labels fit into a routine.

A daytime refresh is a different use. Some brands explicitly allow their mists before and after makeup, so you do not have to remove your makeup and start your skincare again. That permission belongs to the particular formula; it does not mean that every spray is suitable for every stage.

A face mist is not a substitute for sunscreen. Keep following the application and reapplication directions for your sun protection. Likewise, do not drop a moisturiser that keeps your skin comfortable simply because another product comes in a convenient bottle.

How to apply a face mist

1. Read the bottle before the first spray

Check whether it is a skincare mist, a spray serum or a makeup setting product. Look for instructions about mixing, spraying distance and use around the eyes. If the label says to shake before use, do that before spraying. Products with similar names can have different directions.

2. Keep the nozzle at the recommended distance

Close your eyes and aim for a light, even application rather than soaking one patch of your face. For Cream Skin Refiner Mist, LANEIGE recommends holding the bottle 20–30 cm away. Use your own product's stated distance instead of assuming that this measurement applies to every mist.

3. Continue according to the finish you want

When using a mist in your skincare routine, follow its instructions for letting it settle or gently patting it in, then continue with your usual products. Our moisturiser application guide covers that later step.

Over makeup, begin with less product than you think you need and check the result before adding more. A dewy finish may be welcome on one day and more shine than you wanted on another. Avoid rubbing at the base you have just applied.

4. Keep the extra steps optional

You can leave a mist out of your routine entirely. It is worth considering if you like a spray format or want a product that can serve a particular role at home and on the go. Convenience is a useful reason to choose skincare; it does not need to become another compulsory purchase.

Two face mists to consider at MUNO

LANEIGE Cream Skin Refiner Mist

Cream Skin Refiner Mist is a useful option if you want a mist with an explicitly described toner role. LANEIGE's directions include using it at the toner step and gently dabbing it in. The brand also allows use before and after makeup.

This guide refers to Cream Skin Refiner Mist, the product listed at MUNO. Do not automatically transfer details from a differently named Cream Skin product when checking your bottle.

d'Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum

White Truffle First Spray Serum is a spray-serum option with oil and aqueous layers. d'Alba describes using it between skincare steps and before or after makeup. Consider it if that flexible format appeals to you, while following the directions supplied with your bottle.

Choose one product for the role you want to fill. Check the current product page for the listed size and details; you do not need both mists to follow this guide.

Quick questions about face mist

Can a mist replace my toner?

It can fill that place when its directions support it. LANEIGE specifically describes a toner use for Cream Skin Refiner Mist. Choose the format you prefer rather than adding another layer because the bottles have different names.

Is a skincare mist the same as a setting spray?

The terms can overlap, but the bottle format does not promise the same result. Check what the manufacturer says the product is for. A recommendation for a dewy finish is not a guarantee that all makeup will stay in place for a particular number of hours.

Do I need to mist throughout the day?

No. Use it when it suits your routine and its instructions. Repeated application is not a measure of how well you are looking after your skin. If the finish feels excessive or your base looks too wet, use less next time.
