Wondering how to double cleanse without turning your evening into a ten-step project? Start with two products that have different jobs: an oil cleanser, then a water-based cleanser.
This guide uses Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil and Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser to show the order clearly. It is a practical starting point for an evening routine after makeup or sunscreen, with optional skincare ideas once the cleansing is finished.
The quick answer: oil cleanser on dry skin, add water and rinse, then use your water-based cleanser and rinse again. An essence or ampoule comes afterwards; it is not a third cleansing step.
What is double cleansing?
Double cleansing means using an oil-based cleanser first and a water-based cleanser second. Beauty of Joseon describes this sequence in its official routine guide. The two textures play different roles, which is why repeating the same face wash is not quite the same routine.
Think of it as a way to organise your cleansing, rather than a reason to buy a long list of products. Our suggested starting pair is an oil and a gel. You can keep the rest of your familiar routine in place while deciding whether the pairing suits you.
Apply one or two pumps to dry skin and massage gently.
Add water to emulsify the oil, continuing the gentle massage.
Rinse with lukewarm water before moving to your second cleanser.
The current official product FAQ specifies light, non-waterproof base makeup. If you wear waterproof makeup, use a remover intended for that product rather than assuming this oil will remove every formula.
02 · Water-based cleanserFollow with Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser
Beauty of Joseon describes Green Plum as a daily cleanser, not a makeup remover. In this routine, keep it in the second position instead of asking it to do both jobs.
Keep the shopping list simple. These two cleansers are the core of the routine below. Check the individual product pages for the available size and current price before choosing.
Once both cleansers have been rinsed away, move on to your usual skincare. You do not need both an essence and an ampoule just because they appear in a routine guide. If you want an extra hydration step, choose one that fits what you already use, then finish with your moisturiser.
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is one option. COSRX directs users to apply a small amount after cleansing and toning, pat gently, then follow with moisturiser. It belongs after the cleansing steps, not between the oil and gel.
Prefer an ampoule? SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule is another optional choice. The brand describes it as hydrating and instructs users to spread an appropriate amount over the skin and pat it in. Compare the two product pages to decide which format you would actually enjoy using.
This guide is an evening example, not a requirement to use two cleansers twice a day. Choose your routine around the products you wear and how your skin responds; adding more cleansing steps is not a goal in itself.
Does the oil go before or after the gel cleanser?
Before. For this Beauty of Joseon pairing, use Ginseng Cleansing Oil on dry skin, add water and rinse it off, then follow with Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser.
Can I swap the oil for a cleansing balm?
An oil-based balm can take the first position in a double cleanse. Follow the balm’s own instructions and check which types of makeup it is intended to remove; one cleanser’s directions do not automatically apply to another.
Do I need an essence, ampoule and toner as well?
No. They are separate skincare choices, not part of the two-step cleansing definition. Start with the cleansing pair if that is what you need, and keep any additional purchases focused on a clear role in your routine.
